Professional development

Society of Professional Economists’ Professional Development programme

The demand for applying the knowledge and skills of economists to the practical challenges facing our society has never been greater. As the breadth and depth of the discipline of Economics has expanded, however, it has become increasingly difficult for professional economists to stay abreast of the latest and most cutting-edge developments of economic theory and practice.

The Society of Professional Economists provides services designed to support professional development alongside speaker and networking events. These include SPE Courses, Masterclasses, Careers events and support for SPE member-led Professional Development programmes.

SPE Courses

Since January 2022 the Society of Professional Economists has been collaborating with Economicsense to deliver courses to professional economists – SPE Courses.

SPE Courses provides courses for economists who want to stay up-to-date with all these latest developments and trends. From refreshing your econometric skills to learning cost-benefit analysis or the most popular programming languages and data visualisation tools used in economics, SPE Courses will help you meet your needs.

SPE Courses are delivered live and on-demand. Follow the link below to current courses.

Find SPE Courses on Eventbrite.

Masterclasses

Masterclasses are a great way to keep abreast of latest developments for professional economists.  Each Masterclass features a distinguished expert addressing topics relevant to professional economists, focusing on the latest developments in the field. Recent subjects have included macro-economic forecasting, the HMT Green Book, behavioural economics and finance, transport economics, competition policy, and climate change. Sessions conclude with a Q&A, and members are encouraged to provide feedback and suggest future topics.

Attendance can count towards professional accreditation or continuous professional development logbooks if required.

Professional Development with SPE Members

In recent years the SPE has collaborated with Arup on their Economics Accreditation programme. This three-year programme is designed to support staff to develop professionally as economists. Arup provided an update on the programme for SPE members as part of the SPE video series.

Careers Events

The SPE runs an annual careers event for students and has also run events on extending careers as economists and How to be a successful economist.
