Prospects for the Housing Market: a building storm?

Speaker: Rebecca Shafran, BNP Paribas Real Estate
Speaker: Professor Paul Cheshire, London School of Economics
Chair: Stephen Meredith, Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities

Venue: BNP Paribas Real Estate, 5 Aldermanbury Square, London, EC2V 7BP

At this special event to be held jointly with the Society of Property Researchers we will be looking at prospects for the housing market. With interest rates rising, affordability for first time buyers increasingly stretched and transactions cooling, what are we likely to see over the next few years? Are we at the start of a long overdue correction or just a temporary pause before the long upward march for prices resumes? And with a general election nearing and ways to boost housebuilding potentially a key dividing line, what are the policies needed to fix what many see as our broken housing market?

We will be joined by two leading thinkers in the field:

Rebecca Shafran – Senior Associate Director - Alternatives Research, BNP Paribas Real Estate, Rebecca has 18 years of diverse experience across all real estate sectors. The last 6 years she has had a particular focus on operational residential markets leading on Research for the Living sectors at BNP Paribas Real Estate, including Healthcare, Senior Living, Build-to-Rent, and Student Housing. She works closely with the Market teams supporting them with research, data trends, analytics and thought pieces. Prior to this role Rebecca worked at a Development Finance company supporting the loan originators on residential and student housing loan deals.  Rebecca is a member of the Society of Property Researchers.

Paul Cheshire – Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography at the London School of Economics, Paul has been named one of the Planning Industry’s most influential people. He has written extensively on land markets, housing, and urban growth, including his most recent books Urban Economics and Urban Policy: Challenging Conventional Policy Wisdom and the Economics of Land Markets and their Regulation.
